Easy Camping Recipes From A Former Homeless Person

This writer was homeless for most of the five and a half years she lived in southern England. For most of the time, I lived in the woods outside of Bathwick. In that time, in order to survive, I learned a lot of variations of cooking in the outdoors. Here are some of the most reliable easy camping recipes for you on your next camping trip. As you wrap your laughing gear around these delicacies, be amazed that the homeless often have to eat this way every day of the year.

Skip Runs

It is absolutely astonishing what supermarkets throw out on a daily basis. Because of the threat of lawsuits, they HAVE to throw out food before its due date. Because, again, of the threat of lawsuits, food manufacturers have to make their due dates a month or a week before the food actually goes off. In England, it is technically illegal to take anything out of a supermarket’s trash. But it’s not that illegal. The police have too much to do to waste their time on homeless trying to get some food.

You go into the dumpster – or “skip” as it is called in England – and start grabbing all you can carry. Don’t be picky. You have to get in and out before any employees start throwing rocks at you. Also, you don’t want to pass out from the smell. Take five minutes, tops. Then high tail it out of there back to camp.

You can get really interesting ingredients for easy camping recipes from this hodgepodge. Get the biggest pan you can, throw the lot together and you have really tasty glop. If is says it needs to be cooked in an oven, screw it. Improvise. Wrap in foil and stick over a campfire if you have to. Don’t be silly in these easy camping recipes. If something smells odd, don’t use it, no matter how hungry you are. Add plenty of garlic and onions whenever possible to help kill any bad bacteria in the food.

Fast Food Joints

There are many easy camping recipes to be found just lying on the tables of English and Canadian fast food restaurants. In those countries, it is the custom for customers to leave their trash on the tables for the employees to clean up, instead of dumping them in the trash bins themselves. These are easy camping recipes just waiting for you. When the customers leave, you take their leftovers. Take a bag from the restaurant and cup and pretend that you are a customer. Don’t do this everyday at the same place or the employees will catch on.
